Birmingham, Alabama

WHAT IS THIS?

WHERE IS IT?

WHY DOES THIS EXIST?

The Media Window is a place for video art.

It is a TV hanging in the window of a a private residence, with the screen pointing toward the road.

The window pane divides and connects the living room to the sidewalk. Both the home and the city are grounds for love and belonging. Art lives between and illuminates them both.

101 23rd St. N Birmingham, AL

Viewable after sundown and before noon.

The first media window TV fried in the heat. RIP. So, we installed a solar-powered blackout shade that covers the window in the afternoon while the hot Alabama sun blazes this west-facing window.

Because the people of Birmingham deserve as much art as we can squeeze into our city and its 99 neighborhoods. Because โ€œrealโ€ galleries have doors and other barriers. Because why not.

This is a project by Melissa Yes, with collaboration and support from J.R. Williams.

Melissa also curates via the nonprofit Vinegar, so there will be Vinegar / Media Window overlaps from time to time (such as the inaugural Media Window exhibition, Between a Love and a Hard Place).

duration: 1 hr 3 min

We want the Media Window to showcase as much art as possible. We aim to primarily display work by other artists, but we might also use it as a playground for our own creative projects sometimes. Because why not.

This video is something Melissa whipped up last year (2024). We had some troubleshooting issues with the tech, so weโ€™re playing All One Song for a while to make sure everything works.

Its a long, slow video. Enjoy it like a painting, not a movie.
